I first learned of the life of Robert Allerton at Allerton Park, his beautiful estate in rural Illinois bequeathed to the public after his death, as was the case of our National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Hawaii, where he spent the last of his life with his partner John Gregg, who was and is still often referred to as his “son” in spite of the accepted truth that they were romantic life partners in a time when people were beaten, sent to institutions, and sometimes killed because of their sexuality. ALLERTON is an homage to the LGBTQ+ community and one man who did his best to leave the world a better place - in spite of the obstacles he faced.
